Inside Edge was established in 1984 in Cotton Tree, Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast by Bryan Weir.

Today, his son Braden Weir, a third generation surfboard builder, continues the legacy of the family’s surf shop and surfboard brand Weirs Inside Edge. Like his father Bryan and grandfather Norman before him, Braden’s shaping journey started from a simple desire: to create his own boards, start to finish without relying on anyone else in the process.

For Braden, shaping has always been about delving deep into the fundamentals of surfboard design and construction. His approach blends a passion of surfing’s rich history with a personal observation and experience.

In 2011, Braden began hand shaping Alaia’s from gnarled pieces of solid `Paulownia wood. This laid the groundwork for his transition into shaping polyurethane foam, initially drawing inspiration from surfboard designs from the late 60s and 70s. Braden’s shaping journey has evolved through the history of surfboard design, allowing him to experiment with different shapes and materials, always refining his craft.

For over a decade, Braden along with his brother and shaper, Daman Weir have worked with EPS foam, experimenting with EPS/epoxy technology to create boards that are of high quality, durability and performance.

In recent years, Braden has shifted his focus to more experimental designs, pushing the boundaries of surfboard design with new and innovative concepts.

Braden draws inspiration from local Sunshine Coast shapers like Jim Pollard, Eric Cowelly, Paul Pascoe and Kent Manning, whose boards have been tested both locally and abroad. He also credits Dick Brewer as a major influence on his approach to surfboard design.

Braden’s creative vision revolves around classic, flowing curves combined with innovative bottom contours that are tailored to each specific design. Although his boards are experimental, they are rigorously tested in all conditions, with Braden himself providing the most critical feedback. Braden doesn’t stick to specific board models; each board is unique, hand shaped from various templates, and always evolving. His focus is on the pursuit of the best possible ride, informed by a deep understanding of historical designs.

Quality is at the heart of Braden’s process. He is committed to slow, meticulous production, hand-shaping each board from Burford Blanks, laminating with US Silmar resin and handcrafting every aspect- fin panels, foils, sanding, glossing and wet rubbing entirely himself. Braden priorities quality over quantity, sourcing the highest quality materials, often locally and avoiding inferior imported materials whenever possible.

The result? Braden’s boards embody flow, speed and precision. His shapes are designed for deep tube riding, reliable handling in critical conditions and radical pocket surfing. Every design is crafted to enhance the wave riding experience, whether it’s high performance or maximising flow as well as, length of ride.

Braden’s approach is a fresh take on classic curves, blending historical designs with his own ocean experience and endless pursuit of the ride. His shapes, foils and contours reflect a deep respect for the past while moving forward with innovation, always focused on creating functional, visually appealing boards that honour the legacy of those who came before him.
